Turning Scrap Tires into Stronger Roads: Georgia Counties Qualify for EDP's Solid Waste Trust Fund
Many county leaders know about the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s (EPD) Solid Waste Trust Fund (SWTF), which is funded from the state’s one-dollar tire fee on every new tire sold, but what many local leaders don’t know is that every single county in Georgia can qualify for that funding.
This protected fund allows EPD to grant millions of dollars to local governments for innovative uses of recycled tire rubber and services like amnesty days and cleanup services. Unfortunately, many local governments have never applied for these grants—leaving money on the table.
EPD set up two tire grant programs for which counties qualify:
The Scrap Tire Abatement Reimbursement (STAR) Grant gives local governments up to $75,000 each year for amnesty and scrap tire clean up services.
The Tire Products Grant where counties can receive up to $250,000 per grant cycle to create markets for products made from Georgia scrap tires, such as rubber-modified asphalt roads or playground surfaces.
If you are thinking, "This all sounds great, but what do these programs look like in practice?" Let’s highlight several recent projects funded by these programs.
