Starting later this month, at least 800,000 tires covering the former Viva Recycling Tire Center in Moncks Corner will be transported to plants throughout the Carolinas and processed for other uses, according to Berkeley County
officials.

In June the county signed a contract with Liberty Tire Recycling to start the tire removal process on Aug. 20. During the removal, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and Pimlico Fire Department will monitor the site to ensure no unauthorized individuals access it.

The site is closed to the public.

“Berkeley County will work closely with Liberty Tire Recycling to ensure this public health and safety concern is handled in an aggressive manner,” said County Supervisor Bill Peagler in a press release.

Viva is located off Old Depot Road in Moncks Corner, not far from the Fairfield South community — its residents concerned of a possible blaze at the site and other environmental impacts, specifically the spread of mosquito-born illnesses from standing water. County officials said its mosquito abatement crews will continue working the area.
